Four Open Internship Positions at the Vandenberg Coalition

The Vandenberg Coalition (TVC) is a 501(c)(3), non-partisan network of foreign policy leaders, both experts and practitioners, that prepares current and future national security leaders with the context, network, and vision that harnesses principled American leadership to overcome the most significant national security challenges of our time. 

The Coalition is seeking two Government Affairs and two Policy Interns for the 8 week period from Monday, June 6 to Friday, August 5. Interns will receive a stipend of $3,000 for the 8 week period.

Eligibility: 

  • Applicants must be current undergraduate students and/or just-graduated students (e.g., internship can take place the summer after their graduation). 
  • Applicants must have an expressed interest in foreign policy. Applicants need not be specifically working toward a political science, public policy, or international relations degree. 
  • Applicants must hold shared values with the Vandenberg Coalition as articled on our website. 
  • Applicants must maintain an average GPA of 3.0 and above. 
  • Applicants must be willing and able to work in DC for the summer. 
  • Applicants must complete the below application and submit at least one reference check.

Responsibilities: 

Government Affairs Interns (2 open positions)

Government Affairs interns at Vandenberg will have the opportunity to further develop their understanding of the legislative process, campaigning, logistics and event planning, memo-writing, and of course, develop a comprehensive network in the foreign policy community. 

  • Assist in tracking legislation, bill summaries, and hearings to provide timely updates and summaries to Vandenberg’s network
  • Assist in the creation of a future “boot camp” for newly elected members of Congress to familiarize themselves with foreign policy and the law making process, honing event-planning skills while engaging with candidates and their teams
  • Support the Government Affairs team in their outreach and meetings with democratic and republican members of Congress and candidates for federal office 
  • Participate in DC think tank events and receptions
  • Track race developments and research candidates and members Vandenberg is engaged with to provide the most accurate and helpful briefings 
  • Stay up to date on critical updates in Congress and flag important changes and announcements for the Vandenberg team and network

Policy Interns (2 open positions)

Policy interns at Vandenberg will have the opportunity to develop a strong network in the D.C. foreign policy community, engage in timely research that may ultimately lead to publication, develop skills in “rapid response” research, assist in logistics for our regular foreign policy seminars, and help identify opportunities for Vandenberg to amplify the critical work being done by other members of the DC foreign policy community. 

  • Conduct quick research and assessments to ensure Vandenberg is first on the scene to provide foreign policy updates to our Advisory Board, Hill staffers, and candidates
  • Work with the policy team on the creation and dissemination of our weekly newsletter, Beyond the Water’s Edge, as well as assist in the planning and logistics behind our regular webinars and other public events
  • Aid in our public communications via social media, and highlight when and where Vandenberg can fill the gap in traditional media
  • Assist Vandenberg in its goals of being a force multiplier for like-minded institutions by researching the new projects being pursued by partner organizations and identifying opportunities for Vandenberg to amplify more effectively

General Structure: 

The internship program will offer the following components for both Policy and Government Affairs interns,  in addition to a stipend:

  • Access to DC foreign policy think tank events and programming
  • Regular lunches and/or dinners with major national security experts in our network. 
  • Access to the over 90 experts in our network for policy and career guidance 
  • Invitation to Dessert and Discussion salons once a month
  • Team building excursions in the DC area with the Vandenberg team and select Advisory Board members.
  • Regular briefings on national security topics to cover our major foreign policy principles. Briefings could include National Defense: Budget and Readiness; NATO, the UN, and the Multilateral System; Free and Fair Trade; Polling: What the American People Think; American Values in American Foreign Policy; and specific regional discussions. 

What Is the Vandenberg Coalition?

The Vandenberg Coalition (TVC) is a 501(c)(3), non-partisan network of foreign policy leaders, both experts and practitioners, that prepares current and future national security leaders with the context, network, and vision that harnesses principled American leadership to overcome the most significant national security challenges of our time.

Founded in 2021, the network already includes over 90 national security experts and former government officials who are collectively involved in: 

  • Hosting foreign policy and national security briefings for state and congressional leaders as well as candidates for federal office;
  • Developing an “Experts Network” that can be offered to other institutions, the press, or candidates and Members of Congress to build out their expertise;
  • Developing a network of young foreign policy experts who can staff incoming Congressional and Presidential offices/administrations.
  • Organizing educational events with aligned organizations, think tanks, and scholars;
  • Providing briefing papers and news-of-the-day bulletins on key national security topics to candidates and Members of Congress, and providing messaging to make these topics accessible to constituents;
  • Serving as a connector for incoming Members of Congress and candidates for federal office with the D.C. think tank and educational community.
